About the Event
Shield of the City: Know Your Rights & Community Witnessing is a 60-minute training for Minneapolis community members and allies who want clear, accurate guidance on their rights when interacting with police or immigration enforcement.
This session focuses on what the law actually allows, how to assert your rights calmly and safely, and how to document public encounters without escalating risk. We’ll cover constitutional protections, Minnesota-specific laws, and best practices for community witnessing and recording in public spaces.
This training is designed for people who want to help without making situations worse. No prior legal knowledge is required. The emphasis is on safety, accuracy, and grounded action, not confrontation.
Topics include:
Your First, Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendment rights
What to do during public stops or questioning
Your rights at home, including warrant requirements
Recording and observing law enforcement legally in Minnesota
How to avoid obstruction or disorderly conduct charges
What community witnessing is and is not
Simple scripts you can use under stress
